The Trust and Hospital(s)

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust runs acute hospital services, community services, mental health and learning disability services and a quarter of Somerset’s GP practices. It runs services from two acute hospitals – Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, Yeovil Hospital in Yeovil – services in the community and services from the 13 community hospitals in the county, a range of mental health and learning disability services and Symphony Healthcare Services runs a quarter of GP practices in the county.

We are privileged to work with over 9,000 colleagues who deliver or support our patient services. From therapists to nurses, doctors, researchers, scientists, porters, cleaners, kitchen staff, accountants, those who teach the next generation of clinicians and the receptionists who welcome our patients, the contribution of all of our colleagues is invaluable.

We are a leader in the Deanery for the IHI’s Quality Improvement program, with previous doctors in training presenting their work at national & international conferences.

We are renowned for our friendly atmosphere and are consistently highly rated in the National Training Survey in the Deanery for foundation doctor satisfaction. The support from our Academy staff is commended by the highest levels of the Deanery.

Geographically, we are ideally placed with fast rail links to London, whilst the beaches are only an hour away. We have an active junior doctors mess.

Foundation Programmes

The Musgrove Park Foundation Programme takes advantage of the wide range of education opportunities available at Musgrove Park Hospital. It is designed to enable F1 doctors to have a good grounding in the care of the acutely ill patient, experience of other specialist areas, and to fulfil the GMC requirements for full registration in medicine and surgery. All F1’s will rotate through a full AMU rota. In the F2 year the robust education infrastructure of the Programme will focus on the professional skills set out in the GMC document “Good Medical Practice”, including communication skills, team working, governance, ethics and habits of lifelong learning.

Structured education sessions (bleep free) specifically for F1 and for F2 doctors, covering professional and clinical skills, will be held on a regular basis. The formal teaching takes place in a purpose-built multi-professional Academy, which houses a medical library with textbooks, journals and computer access.

The Trust is an Academy of the University of Bristol and Peninsula Medical School.
