The Trust and Hospital(s)

The University Hospitals Bristol (UH Bristol) specialist teaching trust runs nine hospitals across the campus, including:

  • Bristol Royal Infirmary
  • Bristol Royal Hospital for Children
  • Bristol Heart Institute
  • St Michael’s Hospital
  • Bristol General Hospital
  • Dental Hospital
  • Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre
  • Bristol Eye Hospital
  • Bristol Homeopathic Hospital

The Bristol Royal Infirmary has been providing care 'to benefit the poor sick' since 1737 and is a teaching hospital with close links to

Bristol University and the University of West England and provides acute medicine and surgery, critical care, trauma and orthopaedic and emergency medicine services to the population of the southern part of Bristol. It also provides the centre for cardio-thoracic services for the southwest region. The hospital comprises three principal buildings, the original "Old Building", the King Edward VII Building, which stands opposite the Old Building on the north side of Upper Maudlin Street, and the Queens Building - which is also on the north side of Upper Maudlin Street. A fourth, brand new building, theBristol Heart Institute, is located behind the Bristol Royal Infirmary and opened for patients in May 2009.

St Michael's Hospital was built in 1974 and provides a range of services including maternity services, ENT and clinical genetics. We are proud of the current services we offer, particularly those for women and their babies, including gynaecology and cancer-gynaecology. The hospital retains a small and friendly feel but provides modern and progressive services. Pregnant women are offered a range of choices when deciding how best their pregnancy, labour and post labour care is delivered.

The Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC) provides a local service for Bristol children and a referral service for specialist care for families across the South West and nationally. The current building opened on the 22nd April 2001 and was the first purpose-built children's hospital in the South West. In April 2007, a further ward was opened to accommodate children’s services from Southmead, with the long-term aim of centralising all hospital services for children in Bristol at one centre of excellence.

The Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC) provides specialist non-surgical treatments for people with cancer, and for people who do not have cancer but require specialist radiotherapy or haematology services. The three main specialities are oncology, haematology, and palliative care. We are the only Comprehensive Care Centre for Haemophilia in the South West. As well as being the cancer treatment centre for Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset, we provide specialist services to people from across the South West.

The Bristol Heart Institute is a new £61m state of the art hospital that brings cardiology and cardiac surgery services together under one roof for the first time in Bristol. The centre includes three catheter laboratories and a state of the art hybrid theatre, three inpatient wards for cardiac patients, a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), Coronary Care Unit and an outpatients department. In an average year the centre will carry out around 1,700 heart operations, perform 4,000 cardiology procedures, and treat around 15,000 outpatients. The centre is linked to the Bristol Royal Infirmary through theatres and the CICU.
