Teaching information

All F1 doctors receive weekly bleep free teaching at the Education and Research Centre and are encouraged to attend the Grand Rounds on Tuesday lunchtimes. They also attend their weekly specialty teaching within surgery and medicine

The F2 doctors attend a Regional programme of all day teaching and this is complemented by several 2 hour in-house sessions throughout the year. They are also welcome to attend F1 teaching

Educational and Clinical supervision

An educational supervisor is allocated to each foundation doctor for each full year of their Foundation Programme to maintain an overview of development and progress of the doctor within the training programme.


A clinical supervisor will be allocated for each four month placement within the rotation.

The current pay scales are the national NHS rates as described in the annual pay circulars, details of which can be located on the NHS Employers website.


Salaries are calculated in accordance with the Medical & Dental Terms & Conditions of service.

Annual leave

All foundation doctors are entitled to 27 days per annum and 8 statutory bank holidays. The 27 days are pro rata which equates to 9 days leave within each 4 months placement.


In some specialties there is some restriction on when a foundation doctor can take their leave during the 4 month placements depending upon the nature and design of the rota. The individual departments will inform the foundation doctor of any specific restrictions on when they can take leave.


Annual leave must be booked 6 weeks prior to the intended date of leave. If a foundation doctor works any part of a bank holiday they are entitled to an additional days leave in lieu.

Visa/Work permits/Leave to remain

The Trust will consider British/EEA nationals for appointment in the first instance. If the applicant is a non-resident of the United Kingdom or European Economic Union, they are required to have a valid work visa and leave to remain in the UK, which is renewed as required. The Trust is unable to employ or continue to employ the applicant/post holder if they require but do not have a valid work visa and/or leave to remain in the UK.


There is a limited amount of hospital accommodation available. On-call rooms are available for those working out of hours that are unable to travel off and on site but these too are limited therefore advance bookings are advised.
